KEARNEY, Neb. -- The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women scored 20 points during the first day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Health and Sports Center.

Running in just her second race of the year, Shannon Payne not only grabbed second place and eight team points in the 5,000-meter run, she also earned a strong provisional qualifying time for nationals. Her time of 17 minutes, 38.49 seconds was a full 15.81 seconds below the cut-off mark.

Teammates Alicia del Pardo and Christy Severy finished 13th and 14th in the same event.

Josi Heer took third place in the pentathlon, earning the Mountain Lions six points. Her score of 2,872 points was behind only Adams State's Renee Harris (3,218) and Western State's Chelsea Murray (2,960). Heer established new personal records in three events (high jump, shot put and the 800-meter run) and was the top freshman in the competition.

"Josi had a great day," said UCCS coach Mark Misch. "Everything she did was solid."

Also taking third place was the UCCS distance medley team of Melissa McKinley, Jennifer Hunt, Kirstin Knobbe and Kaitlyn Frier. The quartet, all freshmen, clocked in at 12:52.18 behind only perennial powers dams State and Western State.

Hunt also ran the 200-meter dash, taking 23rd with a time of 27.99 seconds.

Jennifer Callan's toss of 10.86 meters was good enough for 11th in the weight throw.

Jessica Hudson qualified for the finals of the 400-meter dash, winning her heat and posting the fourth-fastest time in the prelims at 1:00.19. The finals will be run on Saturday.

Teammates Kelsey Barry and Amanda Stoesz also ran in Friday's prelims. Barry missed qualifying for the finals by 1.46 seconds and Stoesz missed by 1.59 seconds.

William Pendarvis qualified for the finals in the men's 400 as well. His time of 51.74 seconds was the eighth-fastest of the day.

The Mountain Lions distance medley team of Chris Reynolds, Almir Hodzic, Alex Vazquez and Dan Pinter earned the men's team's only team points of the day with a sixth-place finish. Their time of 10:32.30 beat host Nebraska-Kearney and gave UCCS three points.

Branson Bartlett and Gabe Small both competed in the 5,000-meter run, with Bartlett finishing 10th and Small 15th.

Vy Nguyen competed in the 60-meter dash and the long jump, while Jason Shaver took 15th in the 200 meters. Preston Wiliams competed in the weight throw.
