Mountain Lions Make Strides at Air Force Invitational
COLORADO SPRINGS -- Kaitlyn Frier took second place in her heat of the women's mile run Friday at the Air Force Invitational at the Cadet Fieldhouse.
Frier just edged CU-Boulder's Heather West with a time of 5 minutes, 47.80 seconds. There will be another heat of the mile plus the distance events contested on Saturday, the final day of the meet.
In the 400-meter dash Friday, Jessica Hudson finished 27th overall but an impressive second among the 20 Division II runners competing. Teammate Amanda Stoesz was 36th overall and seventh among Division II runners. Kirstin Knobbe and Tracy Falsetto also competed in the event.
Melissa McKinley was also second among Division II athletes in her event, the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:24.50.
The Mountain Lions also had the first competitors in the indoor pentathlon in school history when Josi Heer and Jenny Hunt took on the mostly Division I field.
In men's competition, Dan Pinter qualified for Saturday's finals of the 800-meter run by clocking a time of 2:01.54. Pinter and Adams State's Adam Glenn were the only Division II athletes to qualify for the finals in the event. UCCS' Alex Tiernan had the fastest time among the non-qualifiers, a scant .34 of a second behind Pinter, while teammate Chris Reynolds finished just 1.44 seconds behind.
Alex Vaquez was on his way to breaking the UCCS record in the 400 but was disqualified for stepping on the line. William Pendarvis did finish the race, clocking a time of 51.60 seconds, fifth-best among Division II runners. Jason Shaver also competed.
Almir Hodic represented the Mountain Lions in the 200 meters, taking 35th among the 49 contestants, while Preston Williams competed in the weight throw and Allen Browne ran the mile.
