CHARLOTTE, NC. -- Shannon Payne ran a heady race in Thursday's preliminaries to advance to the finals of the women's 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Irwin Belk Stadium.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs junior will compete in the finals of the 3,000 on Friday. Approximately two hours later she will run in the preliminaries of the 5,000 meters.

Having qualified in two events, it was important that Payne conserve as much energy as possible in Thursday's preliminaries. The goal was to simply finish among the top 12 and advance to the finals.

She did exactly that, finishing fifth in her heat with a time of 10 minutes, 4.01 seconds and going into the finals as the ninth seed.

Payne, who normally prefers to set the pace when she runs, uncharacteristically ran with a pack.

"It was a kind of controlled rage," said UCCS coach Graeme Badger. "You want to run faster but it's dumb to do that."
