Payne, Shepard Win Events at Fort Collins
Shannon Payne won the women's 5,000-meter run, topping five NCAA Division I runners and 16 competitors overall in the process, to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's track team Saturday at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins.
The Mountain Lions ran a split squad Saturday with some athletes competing in Fort Collins and others at the Travis McKinley Open in Alamosa.
Payne covered the distance in 17 minutes, 45.48 seconds, 33.31 seconds better than Colorado's Anna Chase who finished second. Teammate Kristen Andersen finished eighth in the same race while Tavia Hammond took 10th and Leslie Bennett took 16th.
UCCS' Sarah Shepard, Jenna Dorsey-Spitz and Christy Severy took the top three spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Shepard logged a time of 11:37.84, while Dorsey Spitz crossed the line 10.69 seconds later. Severy clocked a 13:12.96.
Lisa Short was the best of three UCCS competitors in the 1,500-meter run, taking 19th in the 34-runner field.
In Alamosa, Kelsey Barry grabbed third in the 400-meter dash at 1:04.44. Barry also ran the 200, finishing seventh of 14.
In other competition, Jessica Hudson took fourth in the 800 and Brittany Fortier finished seventh in the 800. Cory Brever was fourth in the high jump, sixth in the shot put and eighth in the javelin throw.
