Payne Earns Provisional Time at Fort Collins Meet
Shannon Payne won the 5,000-meter run and earned a provisional qualifying time for nationals Saturday at the Rob Upton Track & Field Meet at Fort Collins.
Payne covered the distance at Colorado State's Jack Christiansen Track in 17 minutes, 46.87 seconds, over 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Colorado State's Danielle Rawlings.
Led by Payne's 10 points, the Mountain Lions scored 38 team points to finish seventh in the 12-team field.
Rebecca Wein and Kelsey Barry finished third and fourth respectively in the 200-meter dash with times of 28.65 and 27.12 seconds. Barry also took fifth in the 400 meters with Wein finishing seventh. The duo accounted for 17 team points.
"Everybody showed continued improvement," said Fred Slack, who coaches UCCS' sprinters, jumpers and throwers. "We had too many personal bests today to list them all."
Senior Sarah Shepard nabbed second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:43.34. Leslie Bennett also got on the scoreboard by taking seventh in the 5,000 meters.
