Payne Leads UCCS Women in Boulder
Shannon Payne took second place in the 3,000-meter run Saturday to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's track team at the Potts Invitational in Boulder.
Payne covered the distance in 10 minutes, 23.76 seconds to cross as the top collegiate runner. Renee Baillie, who was competing for the Nike team, took first. Payne bested eight NCAA Division I runners and 13 competitors overall including teammates Kristen Andersen (seventh), Tavia Hammond (11th), Leslie Bennett (12th) and Lisa Short (14th).
The Mountain Lions competed against several Front Range schools including Division I Colorado, Air Force, Northern Colorado and Wyoming and Division II Colorado School of Mines and Metro State. South Dakota Tech was in attendance.
Elsewhere, UCCS' Jessica Hudson continued her steady improvement with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:25.69.
Kelsey Barry competed in two events, nabbing fourth in the 400 meters and eighth in the 200. Rebecca Wein also competed in both events.
Fresh off an all-American performance at the NCAA Division II indoor nationals, Sarah Shepard was the top Division II finisher in the 1,500 meters at 4:58.30 and sixth overall.
UCCS was the only school competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Jenna Dorsey-Spitz topping teammate Christy Severy.
The Mountain Lions' 4X400 relay team featuring Hudson, Dorsey-Spitz, Wein and Barry took third place, besting Division I Northern Colorado in the process.
In field events, Cory Brever tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters.
