Shepard takes eighth at nationals
Sarah Shepard of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished eighth in the women's 5,000-meter run Saturday at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Shepard earned all-American recognition for the third time in her collegiate career. She joined Trent Briney as the only UCCS athletes to be named all-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Shepard's finish earned UCCS one team point, tying the Mountain Lions for 39th despite having just one competitor.
The senior from Glenwood Springs covered the distance in 17 minutes, 11.56 seconds, just .07 of a second behinds Clarion's Erin Richard, who took seventh, and less than a second behind Stacey Kandas of Grand Valley State.
Mandi Zemba of Grand Valley State won the race in a new meet record time of 16:16.77.
The Mountain Lions will begin the outdoor track season next Saturday at the Potts Invitational in Boulder.
