By Doug Fitzgerald published February 10, 2007

Sarah Shepard earned a provisional qualifying time for nationals Saturday at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.

Shepard clocked a time of 17 minutes, 24.72 seconds in the 5,000-meter run. Her time not only easily slid under the NCAA provisional mark of 17:50.00, it was also the better than any Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference runner had managed prior to Saturday.

Shepard was one of two UCCS women competing at Seattle in hopes of earning national qualifying times at sea level. Jenna Dorsey-Spitz also ran in the 5,000, clocking in at 18:26.24.

The rest of the Mountain Lions competed at the CSM Open at Golden. The top finisher of that contingent was Rebecca Wein, who took sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.03 seconds. Jessica Hudson was next among the Mountain Lions with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters.

Kelsey Barry took 11th in the 400 meters, while Wein nabbed 14th in the same event. Barry also took 15th in the 60-meter hurdles, while Danielle Clasby was eighth in the triple jump and 14th in the shot put.
