UCCS Men Struggle at RMAC Championships

ALAMOSA -- The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 4X400-meter relay team finished sixth Tuesday to account for the Mountain Lions' only team points in a disappointing final day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Rex Stadium.

UCCS came into Tuesday with five team points, all earned by high jumper Storm Allen, but expected to add to that total. The Mountain Lions finished just out of the points, though, until the relay team's finish in the second-to-last event of the day.

The day started on a more optimistic note when Dan Pinter took third in his heat in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:08.15.

"Overall, it felt good," said Pinter, who took 12th overall. "I knew to race up at this altitude, I had to go out more conservatively and I might have let those guys get out a little too far ahead of me.

"I felt real good with 200 to go. I though maybe I could catch the second-place guy, but I came up a little short."

Pinter was nearly caught at the end by teammate Alex Tiernan.

"I could feel him coming," said Pinter.

Alex Vazquez, who false-started in the 400, came back to finish 10th in the 800 with a time of 1:57.6. David Harmer came into the event with a faster qualifying time than Vazquez but faded in the final 200 meters to finish 16th.

In field events, Tori Passalaqua took 17th in the javelin throw. Preston Williams was 20th in the shot put and a8th in the javelin. His heave of 120 feet, 8 inches in the javein was a career best.
