Men's Track Competes in Both Fort Collins and Alamosa

Alex Vazquez took fourth place in the 800-meter run to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Saturday at the Travis McKinley Open in Alamosa.

The Mountain Lions ran a split squad Saturday with some athletes competing in Alamosa and other at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins.

Vazquez covered the distance in 2 minutes, 1.6 seconds, just .4 of a second behind Western State's Mitch Diede, who took fourth. Vazquez was just 2.4 seconds behind the race winner, Western State's Kris Berry.

Carl Lum ran the 100- and 200-meter dash, finishing seventh in each. Tory Passalaqua ran with Vazquez in the 800, finishing 11th.

Preston Williams and Blake Hanson each competed in both the shot put and the javelin throw. Williams finished eighth and fourth respectively.

In Fort Collins, Alex Tiernan took 22nd in a 45-runner field in the 800 with a time of 2:00.84. Dan Pinter, meanwhile, finished 24th out of 37 runners in the 1,500 and Carlos Ruibal took 19th in the 5,000.

Joel Keinitz, Tiernan and Dustin Simoens each ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Keinitz took eighth in 10:12.07, while Tiernan finished 10th and Simoens was 12th.
