Allen Earns Provisional Qualifying Mark in High Jump

By Doug Fitzgerald published March 24, 2007

Storm Allen set a new UCCS record and provisionally qualified for nationals Saturday by clearing 6 feet, 9.5 inches in the high jump at the Rob Upton Invitational at Fort Collins.

Allen failed at the height twice before clearing it on his third attempt. He won the event, topping the efforts of Colorado State's Kevin Wills, Colorado College's Brian Bones and Air Force's Brian Walsh and earning 10 team points.

The Mountain Lions earned 35 team points in the meet, good for sixth place in the 13-team field.

In other events, Aaron Rubalcaba-Lopez took third place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15 minutes, 19.58 seconds. In the same event, Carlos Ruibal became the poster child for the Mountain Lions' dramatic improvement this year by shaving nearly a full minute off his previous personal best, finishing sixth in 16:05.85. Joel Keinitz took eighth in the event.

David Harmer finished third in a crowded, 27-runner field in the 800 meters. Harmer's time of 1:57.06 was better than that of 10 NCAA Division I runners and less than a second behind Colorado's Wil Buchanan, who won the race. UCCS' Alex Vazquez also finished in the points by taking seventh.

Another personal best was recorded by Carl Lum, who took fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.18 seconds. Lum also took 10th in the 400 meters.

Alex Tiernan led a contingent of five Mountain Lions in the 1,500 meters by finishing 19th among 48 competitors. Dustin Simeons was next for UCCS, finishing 25th.

In other events, Gabe Small took seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Blake Hanson took 10th in the shot put.
