Simeons Had Career Best Second-Place Finish in the Mile Run on Friday at the Air Force Invitational

Dustin Simeons led a pack of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's track team in the mile run Friday at the Air Force Invitational during the first of a two day event at the US Air Force Academy.

Simeons had the best result of his UCCS career with a second-place finish in the mile run (4 minutes, 42.25 seconds).

Simeons, a freshman, was able to edge out his teammates Dan Pinter, Joel Kienitz, and Carlos Ruibal who each finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively.

For Simeons, he was able to improve his mile time by ten seconds from last weeks meet at the Air Force Academy.

"I felt a lot better than last week," Simeons admitted.

Just like any athlete it is all about improvement.

"I hope I can continue to build on this performance and get better every week," said Simeons.

One of the more uplifting stories was actually about someone who finished more than ten seconds slower than anyone in his sprint and has nothing to do with UCCS.

Brian Wilhelm, who did not represent a school, rather he was posted as an "American War Hero," literally put forth a heroic effort.

Wilhelm was shot in the left leg in Iraq and now has a prosthetic left leg from the left knee cap down. Although finishing well back in his 200-meter heat he crossed the finish line to a standing ovation from all spectators, coaches, and athletes.

Additionally for UCCS, Carl Lum finished fifth in his 400 heat for an overall finish of 39th. He also finished fourth in his 200m heat, good for 37th overall.

Sophomore Alex Tiernan had yet another solid effort and was able to finish sixth in the 3000m.

The meet concludes tomorrow starting at 9:30am at the Air Force Academy.
