Boogman wins vacation for parents
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs high jumper Saskia Boogman made an appearance on CBS' "The Early Show Wednesday" and it had nothing to do with her athletic exploits.
Boogman surprised her parents with a two-week RV vacation, courtesy of CBS and KOA Campgrounds.
Judy and Jan-Willem Boogman knew they were appearing on the show, which was highlighting their hometown, Billings, Mont. The Boogman's thought they were there just to promote their bakery. Judy even baked cookies for the winners of the RV vacation.
What neither knew was that Saskia had entered them in the vacation contest and that they had won. They also didn't know that she was waiting inside the RV.
The shows weatherman told the Boogman's they had won the vacation and Saskia emerged from the RV with a bouquet of balloons and a smile.
A week ago, Saskia told the story in an email to UCCS cross country/track coach Graeme Badger.
"Last week, as I was coming back from a walk around the Olympic Center, I got a call from CBS and it seems I won my parents a vacation!" she wrote. "They're flying me to Billings to surprise them on live, national TV this coming Wednesday!
"I'm not sure if you watch The Early Show, but my parents will be on it talking about the bakery...only to have me surprise them with a vacation! I'm really excited about that! So as you can imagine my life has been a bit hectic with all the planning for the surprise and I'm also very, very bad at keeping surprises from people so it's been a struggle!!"
Saskia Boogman will be competing for the Mountain Lions in the high jump, some sprints and possible other events this coming season. She previously competed for the University of Montana.
That she's a track athlete provides the whole story with a delicious twist of irony. Judy was competing in a track meet in Belgium when she met Jan-Willem. The two were married, moved to Billings and opened Boogman's Bakery.
