UCCS Notches Best Ever RMAC Tournament Result
Shannon Payne, Lisa Short and Sarah Shepard combined for 10 points in the 3,000-meter run Tuesday to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to a sixth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Gunnison, Colo.
The Mountain Lions outscored Colorado Mines, New Mexico Highlands and Mesa State, the first time UCCS has beaten three teams at the RMAC Championships.
Payne notched a provisional qualifying time for nationals by finishing the distance in 10 minutes, 34.06 seconds, good for third place. Short took sixth at 10:21.23 and Shepard was seventh at 11:34.67.
The Mountain Lions also scored some rare sprint points. Cheutney Ellerton notched one point with an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash while Jessica Hudson added two more by taking seventh in the 400-meter dash.
UCCS added a favorable finish in the 1,500 meters with Ashley Birger grabbing fifth place and Kristen Andersen edging Colorado Mines' Loren Large for seventh. Birger accounted for 12 of UCCS' 41 points in the meet and teamed with Hudson, Jenna Dorsey-Spitz and Caitlyn Cochran for two more by virtue of a seventh-place result in the 4X400 relay.
The Mountain Lions' 4X100 relay took sixth place with Ellerton, Cherdaria Mack, Hudson and Cochran completing the race in 51.62 seconds.
Megan Lund was the best of three Mountain Lions in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 41:04.29.
