Birger Leads UCCS to Sixth Place After First Day of RMAC Championships

By Doug Fitzgerald published May 8, 2006

Ashley Birger and Jenna Dorsey-Spitz finished second and fifth respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Monday to provide the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's track team with 12 team points and help lift the Mountain Lions into sixth place after the first day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Birger's time of 11 minutes, 45.6 seconds was nearly 17 seconds better than third place Hannah Davey-Briggs of Colorado Mines. Dorsey-Spitz was barely edged for fourth place by Bridget Brown of Fort Hays State.

Also scoring team points for UCCS was Megan Lund, who grabbed four points for her fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run.

UCCS held a slim lead over Coorado Mines and New Mexico Highlands in the team scoring while trailing fifth-place Fort Hays State by nine points.

The Mountain Lions showed the team's growth by landing a sprinter and a mid-distance runner in the Tuesday's finals. Cheutney Ellerton ran the 100-meter dash in 12.80 seconds, good for seventh place, in the preliminaries while Jessica Hudson qualified sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.01. UCCS has traditionally struggled or has not competed at all in the sprints and mid-distance events.

Ellerton and Cherdaria Mack competed in the long jump, taking 5th and 14th place respectively. Mack had a busy Monday, competing in the 100- and 200-meter dash as well.

Other Mountain Lions to run Monday included Addie Devine and Whitney Lund, who took 11th and 12th respectively in the 10,000 meters.
