Record books rewritten
Shannon Payne shattered the school record for the 5,000-meter run Saturday at the Iowa State Classic.
The previous record for the 5,000 meters was set by Amanda Occhi with a time of 17:10.58. Payne ran 16:58.18 topping the old record by over 10 seconds. Payne finished 12th out of 68 runners.
"We had really good competition," said Payne. "When you have such good competition it pushes you to run a faster race."
Payne wasn't the only Mountain Lion to break a record at the meet. Sarah Shepard was fifth on the school's all-time record for the 5,000 with a time of 17:50.84. Shepard improved upon that time Saturday finishing 15th with a time of 17:14.87. Payne was quite impressed by Shepard's performance
"She ran a great race. I'd glad to see her come back from injury over break and run that well."
The race proved quite historic for UCCS. Payne's finish set the school record for the 5,000 meters and Shepard's finish placed her second to Payne in the record books.
Both Payne and Shepard provisionally qualified for nationals with their times.
The Mountain Lions also competed at the CSM All-Comers meet, but the results were unavailable as of Saturday night.
