Outdoor season starts with photo finish

Nothing like a photo finish to jazz up the start of the outdoor track season.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's track team opened the outdoor season Saturday at the University of Northern Colorado Stampede in Greeley. Although competing primarily against the Division I Northern Colorado Bears, the Mountain Lions were able to post several strong performances.

Starting out the day were Tiffany Flint and Kaitlyn Marsolek running the 400-meter dash. Flint beat out Marsolek in a finish that was so close the meet officials had to defer to the tape. They finished in second and third respectively with times of 1 minute even and 1:00.10.

Coach Graeme Badger decided to put most of his team in the 3000-meter run hoping to dominate. And dominate UCCS did, finishing five of its seven runners in the Top 10. Shannon Payne led the way with a time of 10:37.40, followed closely by Sara Shepard, Tina Gray and Ashley Birger. Also in the Top 10 was Megan Lund.

Flint and Marsolek came back with another close contest in the 200-meter dash.

"It was a photo finish with the girls in the 200 and the 400," said assistant coach Bob Graf.

This time, though, Marsolek edged out Flint with a time of 26.20. The two finished third and fourth respectively.

"We run against each other in practice, and we're running against each other in the meets," said Flint, "It is great to have someone to run with, especially since we are both friends."

Flint, Marsolek, Cherdaria Mack, and Leah Thomspon finished out the first outdoor meet of the season with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:13.10.

"It was a good meet, and we are running as a team," said Badger. "It is good to get everyone out here and competing, especially on such a beautiful day as this."
