Seven Mountain Lions Qualify for Nationals

A school-record seven University of Colorado at Colorado Springs athletes qualified to compete at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The final entry list was released by the NCAA on Tuesday.

Four women and three men qualified for the Mountain Lions. Nationals will be held at Abilene Christian University from May 26 to May 28.

Three UCCS women qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Sarah Shepard, Tina Gray and Ashley Birger will all compete for a national title.

"We're very excited," said UCCS coach Graeme Badger. "It's remarkable to have three qualify in one event."

Shannon Payne qualified for a spot in the 10,000-meter run.

On the men's side, Moses Tum will compete in the 1,500-meter and the 800-meter runs, Brad Winn will line up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and discus thrower Craig Galaydick will be the first UCCS non-runner to compete at nationals.

That six of the seven qualifiers are from Colorado is a testament to UCCS' commitment, under athletic director Stephen Kirkham, to furthering the prospects of in-state athletes. Gray, Birger and Galaydick are from Colorado Springs, Winn is from Pueblo, Shepard is from Glenwood Springs and Payne is from Franktown. The seventh qualifier, Tum, is from Kenya.

"This is another step in the growth of our track & field program," said Badger. "It also demonstrates the progress of the athletic department at UCCS."
