UCCS Wins 8th Steel & Silver Series Trophy
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs clinched its eight consecutive victory in the annual Steel & Silver Series all-sport competition with Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions clinched after the men's golf team won the RMAC championship on Tuesday in Goodyear, Ariz.
UCCS clinched the trophy before the points from softball, outdoor track and field and academics were calculated. Twenty-three points are needed for either school to win the traveling trophy, and the golf championship provided 26 points for the Mountain Lions this season.
UCCS scored the maximum four points in men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's cross country, women's indoor track and field and men's golf. The Mountain Lions and ThunderWolves split the women's basketball series while CSU-Pueblo won both games this season in men's basketball.
The traveling trophy was established for the 2005-06 academic year and scores the performance of the common sports between the institutions and for the highest grade point average for student-athletes in those sports. Points are determined by the regular season contests in soccer, basketball, volleyball and softball, and by the conference championship finish for men's golf, women's cross country and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. Five points are awarded to the institution with the highest grade point average for student-athletes in the common sports.
Women's golf will be calculated in the Steel & Silver Series next season when the Mountain Lions launch their program in fall 2013. CSU-Pueblo finished as the conference runner-up in women's golf earlier this week.
The next matchup in the Steel & Silver Series will take place this weekend when UCCS hosts an RMAC pod to close out the regular season. The Mountain Lions face the ThunderWolves at 10 a.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Mountain Lion Field.
