Sandoval Leads Mountain Lions to Fourth at RMAC Championships
SILVER CITY, N.M. - Veronica Sandoval led the No. 10 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the RMAC Championships in Silver City, N.M.
Sandoval finished No. 12 with a time of 22 minutes, 32.9 seconds, an improvement from last season's No. 19 finish at the RMAC Championships. Sandoval claimed second team All-RMAC while teammate Angie Martell was named third team All-RMAC. Martell finished No. 19 in 22:48.1.
It was the fourth time in program history that the Mountain Lions finished with multiple All-RMAC runners in the same meet. Today also marked the first time in program history that UCCS has had multiple All-RMAC runners in back-to-back championships after the four all-conference performances in 2012.
Lina Arista and Alyssa Wendt finished a few seconds apart placing No. 25 and No. 27 in 23:02.3 and 23:08.5, respectively. Sam Bauer was the final score for UCCS as she finished No. 31 with a time of 23:14.8.
The Mountain Lions were five points from the third place team, Metro State, who is ranked No. 8 in the national polls. It was the first time since the 2005-06 championships when UCCS finished in the top four of the conference championships in back-to-back years.
The team performance also earned four more points for UCCS in the Steel & Silver Series against Colorado State-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves finished No. 14, which moves the UCCS athletic department into a 10-0 lead in the all-sport competition between the two institutions.
UCCS will enjoy next weekend off to prepare for the 2013 NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships in Canyon, Texas, on Nov. 9.
