UCCS takes a tough loss at the Inaugural Downtown Classic
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Inaugural Downtown Classic did not turn out as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (8-2 / 5-1 RMAC) would have liked as they lost to the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves (8-2 / 5-1 RMAC) 66-54 at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.
Set in wonderful downtown Colorado Springs, UCCS didn't feel as at home as they would have liked to start 2013. In the first game played away from the UCCS campus in quite some time, the Mountain Lions never fully seemed like themselves. They committed uncharacteristic turnovers and took shots early in the shot clock far too often.
Abby Kirchoff (14) and Jeri Pikul (13) lead the way for the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard while Lauren Wolfinger pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
As a team UCCS shot well from distance going nine-of-17 for 52.9 percent. Their shooting from up close was not as accurate however as they shot 42 percent from the field.
The biggest lead UCCS held was during the first-half at the 9:01 mark when they grabbed a four-point lead on a Carrie Christopher jumper.
CSU-Pueblo held a big advantage on the glass grabbing 66 rebounds to the Mountain Lions 54.
Erica Hicks was the leading scorer for the Thunderwolves with 20 points.
