Mathewson, Smith Earn All-Tournament Honors
GOLDEN, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs seniors Becca Smith and Lara Mathewson each earned a spot on the RMAC Softball All-Tournament team announced today after the conclusion of the tournament. The duo led the Mountain Lions to the final day of the tournament and the team's deepest postseason run since 2006.
Smith went 2-1 in the tournament and recorded 21 strikeouts. She allowed five earned runs in her four appearances to lower her earned run average to an even 3.00, down from 3.26 at the end of the regular season. Smith improved to fourth in UCCS records in strikeouts in a season with 150 and is tied for fourth in career records with 30 victories.
Mathewson went six-of-13 and improved to third in career records with 218 hits. She recorded three putouts on defense against Colorado Christian and four against Colorado Mesa along with three assists in the four tournament games. Mathewson earned her team-leading 12th double of the season against Colorado Mesa in the second game of the tournament.
UCCS was one of three teams remaining in the tournament before being knocked out in a 3-1 loss to Adams State this morning. The Mountain Lions (26-20-1) will await their NCAA future when the selections are made at 8:30 a.m. MDT on Monday.
