UCCS Continues Tournament Play with Colorado Mesa
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After avenging a regular season sweep to Colorado Christian in the first round, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs will look to take the upper hand in a regular season split against Colorado Mesa in the second day of the 2013 RMAC Softball Tournament. The Mountain Lions (25-18-1) and Mavericks (27-15-1) will play at 10 a.m., at Lakewood Park.
UCCS advanced to the second day of the conference tournament for the first time since 2006 with a 4-3 win in 8 innings against Colorado Christian. Colorado Mesa advanced with a 9-2 win against Fort Lewis and has advanced to the second day for the last five years.
The Mountain Lions and Mavericks split the regular season series in Grand Junction. UCCS won the first game 4-1 and the last game 4-0, while Colorado Mesa won the middle games 7-5 and 2-1. Becca Smith and Jessica Belsterling split the wins during the series.
Smith earned her 16th win of the season and her 29th career win in the 4-3 win against Colorado Christian. She's eighth in season records and fifth in career records, and one more win today would tie her for fourth in career victories. Jessica Belsterling has 31 career wins for third in program records.
A strong offensive performance by Lara Mathewson could move her up in the career hits records. She needs three hits to tie for fourth, and five more to tie for third. Mathewson has recorded 212 hits in her four-year Mountain Lion career with a .375 batting average.
A win for UCCS against Colorado Mesa would keep it in the winner's bracket and set up a 4 p.m., game this afternoon against the winner of the Colorado Mines / Adams State game. A loss would move the Mountain Lions into the loser's bracket and put them into a game with Colorado State-Pueblo at 1 p.m. Both games would take place at Colorado School of Mines and live video will be available for those games.
