Mountain Lions Play Pod Series This Weekend in Lakewood
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (22-12-1 / 17-8 RMAC) travels to Lakewood Colorado this weekend to play Colorado Christian (19-19 / 15-9 RMAC) and Western New Mexico (16-25 / 13-17 RMAC) in a four-game pod series.
UCCS is first in the RMAC for batting average (.365), slugging percent (.547), runs (257), fielding percent (.969), on base percent (.435) and RBIs (233). The Mountain Lions are also rank in the top 15 in the nation for some of those categories. They are fourth for batting average, eighth for scoring, 11th for slugging percent, and 15th for doubles per game.
Colorado Christian is led on offense by Hannah Rapport, who is fifth in the RMAC in batting average (.419). The Cougars premier pitcher is Gevevieve Reyna, who is tied for fifth in the conference for wins (12) and eighth for ERA (3.00).
Western New Mexico is led on offense by Mariah McDonald who is 11th in the conference in RBIs (29), sixth for sacrifice flies (2), and fourth in conference games for doubles (9). The top two pitchers for the Mustangs are Domi Shone and Breanna Eaker, who are ninth and 10th in the RMAC for wins with eight and nine respectively.
The two pitching aces for UCCS are last week's RMAC Pitcher of the Week, Becca Smith, and the first RMAC Player of the Week in 2013, Jessica Belsterling. Smith is currently second in the conference for strikeouts (111), and third for wins (13). Belsterling has a 3.24 ERA, while also leading the Mountain Lions on offense. Belsterling leads UCCS for home runs (11), which ranks 17th in the nation. She is also seventh in the RMAC for batting average (.422).
The best batting average on the team and in the RMAC belongs to Payton Kornfeind (.517), which is fifth best in the nation. She is also tied for second in the conference for stolen bases (17).
UCCS begins the four-game series on Saturday with a split double header as the Mountain Lions face the Cougars at 1 p.m. followed by a game against the Mustangs at 3 p.m.
