UCCS Finishes Series With Double-Header Sweep Against Regis
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (22-13-1 / 17-8 RMAC) sweeps Regis University (7-26 / 6-16 RMAC) in the final double-header of the series.
Game 1 Recap
The first inning saw one hit from each team, but neither was able to get on the board until the second when they both scored one run. Emily Jennings was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second inning and scored in the next at bat with a double to left field by Allie Corids.
Both teams were scoreless again in the third inning, but UCCS broke up the tie game in the fourth. Jennings got things started again for the Mountain Lions with a walk and advanced to second shortly after as Corids also drew a walk. Erin Milburn advanced both runners in her first at bat of the series with a sacrifice bunt to put two Mountain Lions in scoring position.
With first base open, Dani Fonseca, who hit two home runs in yesterdays double-header, was intentionally walked which loaded the bases. Brittney Hoppe scored her first RBI of the series in the next at bat as she reached first on a throwing error.
The Mountain Lions scored two more runs off a double to right center field by Payton Kornfeind, who also scored with two consecutive walks by Nicole Hull to bring in another run. Rachelle Knudson came in to relieve Hull and was able to get out of the inning, but not before UCCS took a 6-1 lead.
Jourdan Hitchings hit a triple right on the chalk down the first base line and scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch. That would be the final run of the inning and of the game, as both teams went one-two-three in the final innings.
Becca Smith earned her second win of the series and improved her record to 13-6 in the 7-1 win. She allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out five Ranger batters.
Game 2 Recap
It did not take long for the Rangers to wake their offense up in the second game as they scored one run in the first inning. The Mountain Lions answered by scoring three in the bottom half of the inning.
Kornfeind started things off with a single to left field and quickly advanced to second with a steal. She scored two batters later with an RBI single to center field by Jessica Belsterling. Fonseca moved Belsterling over to third base as she also hit a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw.
Jennings kept the offense rolling with a double to left field which scored Belsterling and kept runners in scoring position. The Mountain Lions got one more run in the inning as Corids reached first on a fielder's choice which scored Fonseca and gave UCCS a 3-1 lead after the first inning.
The Mountain Lions added one more run in the second inning as Marissa Wallace and Becca Needler each got on base with a single to the outfield to start the second. Wallace scored with a sacrifice fly ball to right field by Belsterling, while Kornfeind and Fonseca each struck out to end the inning.
The Rangers scored two more hits in the third, but failed to add any more runs, however, the Mountain Lions did not. The bottom of the third inning started with a single to center field by Jennings, who quickly stole second base and advanced to third with a single by Corids. Jennifer Schellenberg pinch ran for Corids and stole second base which put two Mountain Lions in scoring position with no outs in the inning.
TJ Flodman got the first out with a strikeout, but Wallace loaded the bases by drawing the walk in her at bat. Becca Needler hit a two run double to right center field which scored Jennings and Schellenberg while advancing Wallace to third base. Wallace scored two batters later with a passed ball, which was the final run of the inning.
The Rangers had another two hit, scoreless inning in the fourth, as the Mountain Lions continued to add to their lead with two more runs. Jennings singled to third and scored with a triple down the first base line by Corids. Corids scored as Jace day picked up her first RBI of the season with a double down the third base line.
That was the final run of the game as Regis failed to mount a comeback in the fifth inning which resulted in a 9-1 win for UCCS. The Mountain Lions picked up their 11th run-rule victory of the season.
Jessica Belsterling earned the win to improve her record to 6-6. She allowed six hits and zero earned runs in five innings pitched.
Up Next: The UCCS Mountain Lions will travel to Spearfish, South Dakota to take on Black Hills State / 4-23 / 3-17 RMAC). The Yellow Jackets were swept in a four game series this past weekend against Colorado Mines.
