Belsterling's Two Homeruns Leads UCCS to a Split in Day One

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Jessica Belsterling's two homeruns aided The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (18-10-1 / 13-6 RMAC) to a split in the first day with Colorado Mesa (14-9-1 / 12-5-1 RMAC), winning 4-1 in game one and falling 7-5 in game two.


Game 1 Recap

Payton Kornfeind started out the first game with a single to third base and advanced to second base with a walk to Lara Mathewson. Emily Jennings brought both of those two runners home as she tripled down the third base line to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

 The top of the second innings saw walks to Erin Milburn and Payton Kornfeind to put runners on first and second base for the Mountain Lions. Jourdan Hitchings then singled to left field to load the bases, but UCCS was unable to capitalize as Severinsen struck out Mathewson to end the inning.

Severinsen got a taste of her own medicine though in the bottom of the second inning as Becca Smith struck her, the next batter, and the entire side out the next inning.  

Another quite inning in the third allowed Smith to take a no hitter with six strikeouts into the fourth as UCCS continued to lead 2-0.

Landry Davis and Payton Kornfeind each got a hit in the fourth inning, but the Mountain Lions were unable to score again. The Mavericks broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo homerun, but the Mountain Lions continued to lead as the teams headed to the fifth inning.

The fifth inning began with a single through the left side as Mathewson got on base, which quickly resulted in a run as Jessica Belsterling hit a homerun to right center field on the first pitch of her at bat.

The Mountain Lions went down one-two-three after that, but took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mavericks got one more hit in the fifth, but went down scoreless as Smith recorded two more strikeouts which allowed UCCS to remain ahead 4-1 as the teams entered the sixth inning.

Both teams were scoreless in the sixth, but TJ Flodman singled to center field for her first hit of the game, which extended her on base streak to 17 games.  That was the only hit of the inning for UCCS, but the Mountain Lions held on to its 4-1 lead as they entered into the final inning of regulation.

Neither team was able to mount any offense in the final inning, which resulted in a 4-1 win for UCCS.

Smith improved her record to 11-4, as she allowed just three hits and one run with nine strikeouts in the win.

Kornfeind had a game-high in hits and was a perfect three-for-three from the plate. Belsterling and Jennings each went one-for-three with two RBIs.

Game 2 Recap

The Mountain Lions began game two quietly as Kornfeind, Hitchings, and Mathewson went down in order. The Mavericks however, did not go down quite as quietly as they scored three runs in the first inning to gain their first lead of the series.

Emily Jennings hit a double in the top of the second inning, but that was the only offense the Mountain Lions could mount. The Mavericks went down one-two-three to enter the third inning still leading 3-0.

UCCS was only able to get one more hit in the third inning as Jourdan Hitchings singled up the middle. Colorado Mesa added one more run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Both teams went down consecutively for a quiet fourth inning.

The Mountain Lions were finally able to get on the board in the fifth inning, which began with a triple by Allie Corids down the third base line. Brittany Hoppe and Becca Needler each popped out to give UCCS two outs.

Kornfeind was hit by a pitch to give the Mountain Lions base runners on the corners, which was soon cleared when Jourdan Hitchings reached third base on an error in center field. The UCCS defense shut down the Maverick offense to end the fifth inning with Colorado Mesa leading 4-2.

Jessica Belsterling began the sixth inning with a solo homerun (8), her second of the day. Jennings followed up with a single to second base and advanced to third, when TJ Flodman extended her games on base streak to 18, with a double down the third base line.

The Mountain Lions then loaded the bases with a walk to Allie Corids, and tied the game in the next at bat as Brittney Hoppe singled up the middle.  UCCS took its first lead of game two as Dani Fonseca flied out to right field for a sacrifice RBI which gave them a 5-4 lead.

The Mountain Lions took that lead into the seventh inning, but were unable to add any insurance runs. The Mavericks rallied back in the bottom half of the final inning with a walk-off homerun to win 7-5.

Jessica Belsterling pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs, but it will be Becca Smith, who entered in the bottom of the seventh inning who will get the loss. Smith's record drops to 11-5.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday to conclude the series with another double-header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
