Flodman Extends On Base Streak as UCCS Splits Day 1

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (13-8-1 / 8-4 RMAC) split today's doubleheader with Adams State (7-6 / 6-2 RMAC). TJ Flodman reached base in each game to extend her on base streak to 12 games as the Mountain Lions won game one 3-0 and fell 4-3 in game two.


Game 1 Recap

The Mountain Lions scored first in the series with one run in the first inning. Payton Kornfeind led off the game with a triple down the third base line. Lara Mathewson got the RBI two plays later when she doubled to left field to score Kornfeind.

UCCS added two more runs in the fourth inning. Flodman began the fourth with a double to left field to extend her ten-game on base streak to eleven. Kornfeind earned the RBI a few batters later as she reached on a fielder's choice. Mathewson then earned her second RBI of the game as she doubled down the first base line to score Kornfeind again.  

There would be only one more hit in the game, as UCCS went on to win 3-0.

Mathewson finished with a game-high three hits and two RBIs as she went three-for-four from the plate.

Kornfeind finished two-for-four from the plate and scored a game-high two runs.

Becca Smith earned the win to improve to 7-3 on the season. She allowed just four hits in the shutout win while recording five strikeouts.


Game 2 Recap

The Grizzlies scored first in the second game to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They held kept that lead until the third inning when both teams scored.

Adams State added two more runs in the third as UCCS scored one to get on the board. Jourdan Hitchings started off the third inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base. Jessica Belsterling helped her own cause as she earned the RBI with a double to left field to score Hitchings.

The Mountain Lions scored another run in the fifth inning as Belsterling scored her second RBI of the game with a single to left field to score Kornfeind, who started the inning with a single to third base. The Grizzlies answered with a run of their own in the inning, to take a 4-2 lead.

UCCS scored one more run in the seventh inning as Mathewson doubled to left center, and later scored as Emily Jennings hit a sacrific fly to first base. That would be the final score of the game as the Mountain Lions fell to the Grizzlies 4-3 to conclude the doubleheader with a split.

Kornfeind and Belsterling each finished going two-for-four from the plate. Flodman went one-for-three to extend her on base streak to 12 straight games. Belsterling also recorded five strikeouts and allowed three runs in her six innings pitched.

Up Next: The Mountain Lions and the Grizzlies will conclude the four-game series tomorrow with another double header. Opening pitch is set for 11 a.m.
