Mountain Lions Sweep Roadrunners in Day 1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (12-7-1 / 7-3) swept Metro State (6-11 / 0-7 RMAC) today as the Mountain Lions defeat the Roadrunners 11-4, 10-2 and 8-7.
Game 1 Recap
The Mountain Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first game with four runs in the first inning. They replicated that in the next inning as they scored four more in the second, while holding the Roadrunners scoreless until the third.
Metro State put up three runs in the third, but that would not be enough to make a comeback as they would only add one more run in the game. UCCS went on to win 11-4.
Leading the way for UCCS in the first game was Jessica Belsterling, who went four-for-four at the plate with one home run and three RBIs. Emily Jennings also had one home run and three RBIs as she went two-for-three.
Becca Smith improved to 7-3 on the season with the win as she allowed five hits and three earned runs.
Game 2 Recap
UCCS continued right where it left off in the first inning of the second game with nine runs.. That would prove to be too much for the Roadrunners to come back from, even though the Mountain Lions only scored one more run in the game.
Payton Kornfeind recorded her first home run of the season in dramatic fashion as she hit a grand slam for a game-high four RBIs. Kornfeind finished the game three-for-four. Lara Mathewson and TJ Flodman were each perfect from the plate in game two as Mathewson went three-for-three from the plate while Flodman went two-for-two.
Jessica Belsterling earned the win in her five innings pitched with four strikeouts while allowing just five hits and two runs.
Game 3 Recap
The Roadrunner bats woke up in the third game as they scored two runs in the first inning to take their first lead of the series. Metro State added one more run in the second and three more in the third.
UCCS took the lead in the second inning with four runs.
Metro was able to regain the lead with their three-run third inning, and kept the lead until the sixth inning, when UCCS tied up the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Belsterling singled to put the winning runner on the base for UCCS, which would be the difference in the game as Allie Corids brought her home with a walk-off single to left field.
Korey Kulpins earned the win in her five innings pitched to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Game four of the series was canceled due to weather conditions.
