Smith Strikes Out Nine in 3-1 Loss to Grizzlies
GOLDEN, Colo. - Becca Smith struck out nine batters to move into fourth in University of Colorado Colorado Springs season records and pitched a shutout through the first five innings, but Adams State scored three runs in the sixth inning as the Grizzlies (24-17) won the 3-1 elimination game against the Mountain Lions (26-20-1) today in the 2013 RMAC Tournament.
Smith struck out the first three batters in the top of the first inning and UCCS took advantage of errors in the bottom of the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. Adams State committed back-to-back errors at first base with two outs, and the second error on a dropped fly ball allowed Lara Mathewson to score from second.
The two teams played scoreless in the second through fifth innings, and Smith recorded four more strikeouts in that span. UCCS faced no more than four batters in each of the innings in the stretch.
Adams State put the first two batters of the sixth inning on base before a double brought home the tying run and put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly to center field brought the go-ahead run across and put another runner onto third, and a fielder's choice to keep the runner at third allowed for the Grizzly's Krista Bedford to reach first. When Bedford stole second, the throw from the catcher to second went wide and allowed Erika Ecsedy to score from third. Smith retired the final two batters on swinging strike outs to close the top of the sixth.
Both teams went down in order in the final one-and-a-half innings as UCCS fell on the short end of a 3-1 decision.
Smith's nine strikeouts moved her into fourth in UCCS season records with 150 strikeouts. Lara Mathewson moved alone into third in program career records with a hit in the first inning and has 218 hits in her four seasons.
The Mountain Lions will await their postseason future when the NCAA Division II Softball Committee releases the brackets on Monday morning. UCCS was ranked No. 10 in the rankings earlier this season but came into the conference tournament outside of the top 10.
