Mountain Lions Face Cougars in RMAC First Round
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time in the last three seasons and for the seventh time under Head Coach Scott Peterson, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team will compete in the RMAC Softball Tournament. The Mountain Lions open against No. 3 seed Colorado Christian on Friday at 10 a.m., at the Colorado School of Mines Softball Field.
The two teams met two weeks ago, when the Cougars took the two games by a combined three runs at Lakewood Park. The Mountain Lions and Cougars are meeting for the first time in postseason play, and Colorado Christian is coming off a runner-up finish in last year's RMAC Tournament.
UCCS is projected to welcome Payton Kornfeind back into the lineup, who was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year on Tuesday. Kornfeind played in the first game against Colorado Christian on April 20, but has missed the last six games due to injury. She's third in the country with a .520 batting average and is No. 10 in UCCS records with 64 hits.
Kornfeind led five Mountain Lions who earned All-RMAC honors earlier this week with her first team selection. Jessica Belsterling, Jourdan Hitchings and Becca Smith were Second Team honorees along with Lara Mathewson on the Third Team. Colorado Christian finished with four All-RMAC student-athletes and with two on the First Team.
The Cougars enter the conference tournament with six wins in the last eight games, but only went 1-6 on neutral fields during the season. UCCS faced three of the top four seeded teams in the last two weekends and went 4-5-1 on neutral fields in 2013.
A win for the Mountain Lions will mark their first conference tournament victory since 2006, and will allow UCCS to take a break until Saturday. A loss would move UCCS into the consolation bracket and into a 4 p.m., game on Friday against the loser of the No. 2 Colorado Mesa / No. 7 Fort Lewis game.
Fans can follow the Colorado Christian game with live stats through Colorado Mines, and through live audio from the Mountain Lions' Ustream channel. Updates will also be posted throughout the game on the Mountain Lions' twitter account, @GoMountainLions.
