Belsterling Leads UCCS in Day One

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (22-14-1 / 17-10 RMAC) falls to Colorado Christian (20-19 / 16-9 RMAC) 5-4, and to Western New Mexico (17-25 / 14-17 RMAC) 10-6 today to begin a four-game pod series.

Game 1 Recap

Colorado Christian scored one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead as UCCS failed to score until the fifth inning.  

The Cougars had a four run lead as the Mountain Lions narrowed the gap with an RBI double by Lara Mathewson, followed by a two run home run by Jessica Belsterling . The Cougars scored one run in the bottom half to take a 5-3 lead after five innings played.

The Mountain Lions scored one more run in the sixth, but failed to score in the seventh to mount a comeback as they fall 5-4 in the first game of the series.

Becca smith pitched six innings and had three strikeouts, as her record falls to 13-7 with the loss.

Game 2 Recap

Payton Kornfeind started the second game for UCCS with a single to shortstop. Mathewson singled through the right side to give the Mountain Lions two runner on base with no outs. Belsterling advanced the lead runner to third base as she reached first on a fielder's choice.

Emily Jennings drew a walk in her at bat which loaded the bases. Dani Fonseca also reached on a fielder's choice, and Marissa Wallace grounded out, but each earned an RBI to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead.

Western New Mexico also had a good first inning on offense as the Mustangs scored three runs. They scored two more in the second, and led 5-3 until the fourth inning.

UCCS got two runners on in the fourth as Jen Schellenberg walked and Jourdan Hitchings reached on a bunt. The Mountain Lions brought the game closer with a double by Belserling that scored two runs.

The Cougars had a one run lead into the fourth inning, but added four more to take a 9-4 advantage into the fifth.  

Jessica Belsterling hit a 2 RBI ground-rule double in the top of the sixth inning, but UCCS was again unable to mount a comeback as the Mustangs added one more run and finished with a 10-6 win over the Mountain Lions.

Belsterling led the team on offense as she went five-of-six at the plate with four RBIs and her 12th home run of the season. Her record as a starter this season falls to 6-7 with the loss.

Belsterling and the rest of the Mountain Lions will be back in action Sunday for two more games to finish the pod series. The first game will be a rematch against the Mustangs at 12:00 p.m. followed by the final game against Colorado Christian starting at 2:00 p.m.
