Fonseca Leads UCCS With Two Home Runs in Day One

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (20-13-1 / 15-8 RMAC) split today's double-header with Regis University (7-24 / 6-14 RMAC) as the Mountain lions won the first game 5-0 and lost the second game 6-2.
Game 1 Recap
Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the first game as the Rangers were not able to get their first hit until the third inning, which is the same inning that the Mountain Lions scored their first run. Jessica Belsterling got UCCS on the board in the third with a solo homerun (11) to right field.
The fourth inning was quite again as neither team was able to get a runner on the bases. The Rangers were able to record its third hit of the game, but failed to score.
Jennifer Schellenberg started the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle, and advanced to second off a single by Payton Kornfeind. Jourdan Hitchings hit a sacrifice in the next at bat to advance both runners into scoring position. Jessica Belsterling also hit a sacrifice in her at bat as she drove the ball deep to left field which scored Schellenberg to give UCCS a 2-0 lead.
The Rangers were silent again in the sixth inning, as they got one hit, but could not score. Allie Corids started the bottom half of the inning for UCCS by getting on base on an error in left field. Dani Fonseca pinch hit in the next at bat and crushed the ball to left center field for a two run homerun (2).
The Mountain Lions added one more run in the inning to take a 5-0 lead, which would be enough to get the victory as the Rangers were unable to mount a comeback in the seventh inning.
Belsterling went two-for-three with two RBIs and one homerun.
Becca Smith improved to 12-6 in the shutout win. She had nine strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
Game 2 Recap
The Rangers finally got on the board in game two as they scored one run off of two hits to begin the second game.
Payton Kornfeind and Lara Mathewson each got a hit in the bottom of the first inning, but the Ranger defense was able to keep the Mountain Lions from scoring.
Regis went silent in the second inning, which allowed UCCS to take its first lead of the second game as Dani Fonseca hit her second homerun of the day, which was a two run blast to left field. That would be the last runs of the day for UCCS though as the bats fell silent for the Mountain Lions the rest of the game.
The Rangers added one more run in the fifth and sixth innings and then sealed the game in the seventh inning with three more runs.
UCCS was unable to rally back, as the Mountain Lions fell for the first time at home this season in the 6-2 loss.
Jessica Belsterling's record drops to 5-6 in the loss, but she did record a season-high 10 strikeouts.
Up Next : The Mountain Lions and the Rangers will be back in action Sunday for another double-header starting at 11:00 a.m.
