Mountain Lions Take on the Mavericks This Weekend in Grand Junction

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (17-9-1 / 12-5 RMAC) travels to Grand Junction this weekend to take on Colorado Mesa (13-8-1 / 11-4-1 RMAC) for a four-game series at Bergman Field.

The Mavericks have beaten the Mountain Lions in three of the previous four games and lead the all-time series 66-32.

The Mountain Lions enter this weekend on a four game winning streak, and have won eight of the previous 10 games.

UCCS is first in the RMAC for batting average (.379), slugging percent (.557), stolen bases (44), runs (220), fielding percent (.967), on base percent (.449) and RBIs (198).

The Mountain Lions also rank in the top 10 in the nation for some of those categories. They are second for batting average, seventh in slugging percent, and fifth in scoring.

UCCS is led on offense by Payton Kornfeind who is first in the RMAC and 11th in the nation for batting average (.506). Kornfeind is also second in the conference for stolen bases (14), fourth in RBIs (31), and 30th in the nation for RBIs per game (1.24).

Kornfeind also has a 10 game hitting streak, while TJ Flodman has reached base in the previous 16 games.

Emily Jennings is currently 12th in the nation for RBIs per game (1.43) and fifth in the RMAC for total RBIs (30).

The Mavericks are led on offense by Makayla Kovac, who is second in the RMAC in RBIs (37) and fourth in homeruns (7).  Kovac is also first in conference games in doubles (8), total bases (57), and slugging percent (1.056).

This weekend will also see the matchup between top RMAC pitchers Becca Smith and Jessica Severinsen.  Smith is second in the RMAC for wins (10) and strikeouts (84), and is 36th in the nation for strikeouts per seven innings (7.6).

Severinsen is right behind Smith, as she is tied for third in the RMAC in wins (9) and is fourth in strikeouts (62). She is also first in conference games for shutouts (5) and has the third best ERA (1.52).
