Kornfeind Leads the Mountain Lions in Day 2 With Three RBIs
CHADRON, Neb. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (9-8-1 / 4-4 RMAC) falls to Chadron State (7-7 / 6-3 RMAC) 4-5 and 1-4 to conclude the four-game series in Nebraska.
Game 1 Recap
The first inning saw just one hit for UCCS as Jourdan Hitchings hit a single up the middle. She stole second base, but was unable to capitalize as the Mountain Lions quickly played into three outs. Becca Smith retired the bottom half of the first quickly as well, as the recorded two strikeouts in the inning.
Emily Jennings and Allie Corids each flied out to begin the second inning, before TJ Flodman was able to break through with a single to shortstop. Becca Needler followed that up with a single to right field, which put two runners on base with two outs. Jennnifer Schellenberg was then walked to load the bases for UCCS, with the top of the line back up to bat.
Payton Kornfeind delivered with a three run double to center field, which gave UCCS a 3-0 lead. Hitchings recorded her second hit of the game in her next at back, as well as second steals of the game moments later. This however, would be end of the run for UCCS in the second inning, as Lara Mathewson struck out in the next at bat.
After a double to begin the bottom of the second inning, Smith struck out the next three batters to record her fifth strikeout in two innings played. UCCS took its three run advantage into the third inning.
The Mountain Lions began the third with a walk to Jessica Belsterling. She advanced to second base on the next play as Emily Jennings grounded out to third base.
The reigning RMAC Player of the Week, Allie Corids, then recorded her first RBI of the day as she hit a single to left field which scored Belsterling. The second walk of the inning for Aryn Grywusiewicz then sent Flodman to first and advanced Corids to second with one out. The second and third outs came quickly after though, as Needler went down swinging and Schellenberg lined out to short stop.
Another quiet inning for the Eagles, accompanied with another Smith strikeout, kept the score 4-0 in favor of UCCS after three innings played.
Kornfeind flied out to begin the fourth inning, before Hitching singled for her third consecutive hit in the game. Mathewson then reached on an error, which put runners on first and second base. Belsterling flied out next, to record the second out of the inning. Grywusiewicz then loaded the bases as she walked Lindsey Buck. The Eagles were able to escape the inning with no damage as Corids grounded out in the next at bat.
The fourth inning would be the first inning that Smith did not record a strikeout, but the end result would be the same, as the Eagles again went down, without putting any runs on the board.
The Mountain Lions also failed to add any more run the next inning, but did find themselves in scoring position. After starting with two quick outs, Schellenberg singled to the pitcher and then advanced to third on a single by Kornfeind. Brittney Hoppe came in to pinch hit, but lined out to left field to end the top half of the fifth inning.
The Eagles had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Becca Smith was able to get three consecutive outs, including two straight strikeouts to retire the side.
UCCS was held scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, which allowed Chadron State make up some ground as they began the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun. The Eagles would tack on four more runs to take a 5-4 lead going into the top of the seventh.
Down by one run in the final inning of regulation, TJ Flodman started off with a walk to put the tying run on base. To put additional speed on the bags for UCCS, Landry Davis pinch ran for Flodman. Davis would not get the opportunity to utilize her speed though, as Davis was thrown out at second when Needler reached first on a fielder's choice.
Schellenberg would advance Needler on the next play with a SAC bunt to put the tie runner in scoring position. Kornfeind was walked in her next at bat, which up runners on first and second base with two outs in the inning. Dani Fonseca then saw her first action of the game as she came in to pinch hit. Fonseca was unable to put the ball in play, as she struck out to end the game.
Smith's record will drop to 6-3 as she gets the loss in her 5.1 innings pitched. She had eight strikeouts and zero walks on the day.
Game 2 Recap
Kornfeind picked up in the second game right where she left off as she reached first on an error, and quickly stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Hitchings and Mathewson both flied out for the first two outs of the game. Kornfeind advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored as Belsterling reached first on an error. Allie Corids concluded the inning with a strikeout, but the Mountain Lions were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead before she did.
The Eagles put up one hit in the bottom half of the first, but were unable to bring the runner home.
The Mountain Lions picked up two quick outs to start off the second inning, but Fonseca and Hoppe were each walked to give UCCS two runners on base. Kornfeind was unable to take advantage of the two walks as she grounded out to second to end the inning. Belsterling's two strikeouts in the bottom of the second helped UCCS take their 1-0 lead into the third.
Hitchings led off the third inning with a single to right field. She advanced to second the next play as Mathewson grounded out. The Eagles got out of the inning in a hurry though as Belsterling lined into a five-four double play. The Mountain Lions defense answered right back as the Eagles went down one-two-three.
The bats for UCCS remained silent in the top of the fourth inning as Corids, Flodman, and Needler all went down in order.
Belsterling began the bottom of the fourth inning with her fourth strikeout of the game and followed up with her fifth and sixth as she struck out the side.
Fonseca woke up the bats in the fifth as she started off with a single. Hoppe hit into a fielder's choice to third base for the first out of the inning. Kornfeind recorded the second as she fouled out to left field. UCCS then found themselves with two outs and two runners on after Jourdan Hitchings got her fifth hit of the day. A Mathewson walk loaded the bases for the Mountain Lions with Belsterling up at the plate. She made solid contact with the ball, but us unable to send it over the centerfielder's head, as she flied out to end the inning.
The Eagles surged in the bottom of the fifth inning to score four runs on four hits and took a 4-1 lead as they entered the sixth inning. The Mountain Lions answered in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases to start the inning.
Corids began the inning with a single to right field, followed by a walk to Flodman. Needler picked up the first out of the inning as she flied out to center field. Fonseca loaded the bases on the next at bat with a single, but UCCS could not capitalize as Hoppe hit into a double play.
Chadron State threatened to score again in the sixth inning they recorded two hits and had runners on second and third. Belsterling remain composed and finished off the inning with a strikeout.
The Mountain Lions had the top of the order up to begin the seventh inning, but were unable to mount a comeback as Kornfeind, Hitchings and Mathewson each went down.
Belsterling's record will move to 2-4 with the loss today. She had a season-high eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Hitchings finished the day going five-of-seven at the plate. Kornfeind led the team with 3 RBIs.
