CHADRON, Neb . - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team (9-5-1 / 4-1) splits today's games with Chadron State (4-7 / 3-3 RMAC. The Mountain Lions run-ruled the Eagles in the first game 12-0 after five innings, but fell 0-5 in the second game for their first conference loss this season.
Game 1 Recap:
Payton Kornfeind reached first base on an error to begin the first game. Kornfeind quickly stole second base to put herself in scoring position early in the first inning. She advanced shortly after when Jourdan Hitchings singled to short stop to put runners on the corners. Hitchings stole second a few pitches later, and the bases were soon loaded as Lara Mathewson was walked in the next at bat.
Jessica Belsterling battled hard in her first appearance at the plate as she gets walked on the ninth pitch to keep the bases loaded and give the Mountain Lions their first run of the game. Emily Jennings would be also walked in her first at bat, which gave UCCS a 2-0 lead with the reigning RMAC Player of the Week, Allie Corids coming up to bat. Corids kept her bat hot as she singled to short stop for her first RBI of the game.
The Eagles finally got an out in the first inning as Aryn Grywusiewicz struck out TJ Flodman and then repeated with another strikeout on Becca Needler. That wouldn't be enough to get out of the inning though, as Landry Davis reached second base on an error in the next at bat, which brought in two more runs for UCCS.
In her second at bat of the inning, Kornfeind singled up the middle to score another run, which made it 6-0. Kornfiend then earned her second stolen base, which put runners on second and third with two outs. Hitching flied out in her next at bat, which put an end to the offense explosion for the Mountain Lions to begin the game.
UCCS held Chadron scoreless in the bottom of the first, to take a 6-0 lead into the second inning.
The Mountain Lions started the second inning with two consecutive outs, as Mathewson and Belsterling both flied out to center field. Jennings reached first base in the next at bat when she was walked, but was caught stealing to end the top half of the second inning. The Eagles also had a one-two-three inning in the second.
Allie Corids and TJ Flodman both reached on a single to start the third inning. Needler then got to second base on another Eagle error, which scored Corids and left two runners in scoring position with no outs. Davis reached on a fielder choice in the next at bat, which scored Needler, and gave UCCS an 8-0 lead. This prompted a pitching change for Chadron State.
Breeze Phillips entered the game, and quickly struck Kornfeind for the first out of the inning. Brittney Hoppe entered the game to pinch hit for Hitchings, and singled up the middle for two RBIs to advance the UCCS lead to ten runs. Mathewson flied out and then Belsterling grounded out, which concluded the top half of the third inning.
Both teams had a quiet fourth inning, which allowed UCCS to take a 10-0 lead into the fifth.
The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the fifth inning off of the fifth Eagle error, which gave UCCS a 12-0 lead going to the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles were unable to mount a comeback and were run-ruled at the end of five innings.
Becca Smith pitched a great game as she improved to 6-2 on the season. She had eight strikeouts in five innings pitched and allowed just two hits in the shutout victory.
Game 2 Recap:
Payton Kornfeind started off a single right back to the pitcher. She would steal second and then get caught stealing in the next at bat, before Hitchings doubled to center field. Mathewson struck out for the second out of the inning. Belsterling followed up with a single to center which advanced Hitchings to second, but she was given the green light to head home and was thrown out at the plate to conclude the top half of the first.
The Eagles found themselves with bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, but Belsterling managed to escape the inning allowing just one unearned run. Chadron State would claim its first lead of the series as the first inning came to an end with the Eagles up 1-0.
The Mountain Lions went three-up, three-down in the second inning, as Jennings, Corids, and Flodman each grounded out up the middle. The Eagles followed suite as they also went down in order for a quiet second inning.
It appeared almost as if someone pressed replay because the third inning was nearly identically to the second for UCCS, as they went down in consecutive order, grounding out up the middle each time yet again. Likewise, Chadron State also went down one-two-three, just as they did in the previous inning.
The fourth inning did not play out as the previous two did, but the end result was still the same for UCCS. They began the inning with two runners on and no outs, but quickly hit into a fielder's choice and then a double-play to finish the top half of the fourth inning still scoreless.
It was much of the same in the fifth inning, as both teams continued to struggle on the offensive end. Chadron State overcame their woes in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they tacked on four more runs to take a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning.
The Mountain Lions were unable to rally in the top of the seventh inning, which resulted in the first conference loss of the season for UCCS.
While Jessica Belsterling earned the loss, she only had one earned run and recorded seven strikouts.
Up Next: Both teams will be back in action tomorrow to conclude the four-game series beginning at 11:00 a.m.
