Four Mountain Lions Named to RMAC All-Conference Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS - John Lennon and Paul Mcartney provide the theme for Saturday afternoon's games with their classic melody, "With a little help from my friends." Both Jessica Belsterling and Korey Kulpins got by Colorado Christian with a little help from their friends.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced its All-Conference teams on Tuesday for the 2012 softball season. UCCS junior Lara Mathewson was named first team conference, sophomore Jessica Belsterling was named second team, true freshman Emily Jennings made the third team, and Junior Landry Davis made third team.

Mathewson, the second baseman from Westminster Colo, hit a team best 11 home runs (tied 6th best in the conference) and had the 2nd  highest batting average on the team at .419 (11th best in the conference). She also led the team with 42 RBI's and was 3rd on the team in hits (49). She was also had a .803 slugging percentage which was good for 4th best in the conference, as well as the 5th best on base percentage in the conference at .511%. Mathewson started all 38 games for the Mountain Lions that she played in.

Belsterling, a pitcher and hitter from Glendale Ariz., was 3rd  on the team with a .403 batting average, 5 home runs, and lead the team with 58 hits. She also had 36 RBIs. Along with those impressive offensive stats, she had 16 wins, 166 strikeouts and a 5.13 ERA as a pitcher. Belsterling's 16 wins was good for 2nd best in the conference. Belsterling also led the conference in total strikeouts (166) and strikeouts per inning (8.42).  Belsterling started all 44 game that the Mountain Lions played this season.

Jennings, a utility infielder from nearby Liberty High School here in Colorado Springs, was 2nd  on the team with 38 RBI's, swinging at a .320 average. The true freshman also hit 9 home runs on the season and scored the fourth most runs on the team (28).

Landry Davis, an outfielder from Chandler, AZ, was the offensive leader of the Mountain Lions outfield batting .383 on the season.  Davis also started 42 games.

Colorado Christian's Hannah Rapoport was named the softball player of the year by the RMAC. Kelly Unkrich from Colorado School of Mines was named the pitcher of the year for the second year in a row. The freshman of the year award went to Ariel Lopez, from Colorado State Pueblo and Rachel Illias from Regis University making them co-freshman of the year. Coach of the year award also was split between two coaches, Shane Showalter of CSU-Pueblo and Daven Bond of Colorado Christian University.
