UCCS Wins Weekend Series with CCU

COLORADO SPRINGS - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs capped their 2012 season with a split against the Colorado Christian University Cougars at Mountain Lion Field Sunday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions (22-23, 20-20 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost the opener 7-3 but bounced back to win the second game 9-7.

Senior day was small but meaningful as UCCS' lone senior Christina Blanton wrapped up her Mountain Lion career among the schools all-time leaders in at-bats, hits and home runs.

The Mountain Lions came into the day already out of the RMAC playoff picture but managed to hang tough and grind out a win in their final game of the season.

UCCS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but could not do anymore damage to CCU starter Genevieve Reyna (18-13), who settled in nicely after the rocky first.

Marissa Wallace was a bright spot in the first contest going 3-for-4, but Mariah Bledsoe did the same thing for the cougars going 3-for-4 including a home run.

Jessica Belstelring, who took the loss, concludes her impressive season on the mound at 16-11 with an ERA of 5.13.

The second game was a well-tossed game by freshman Korey Kulpins (6-12) who let her defense work for her and managed to pick up the win without registering a strikeout.

Home runs from Emily Jennings and Becca Needler provided plenty of offense for the Mountain Lions who snagged a 9-7 victory to take a total of 3-of-4 games on the weekend.

Colorado Christian dropped to 28-25 overall and 24-16 RMAC.

With only Blanton graduating, this Mountain Lion squad will be a force to be reckoned with next spring.
