Las Vegas, NM: The UCCS Mountain Lions softball team was on the road this last weekend for two doubleheaders against the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls.  The Mountain Lions managed to win two out of four and improve their conference record to 11-15.

Saturday's first game saw the Mountain Lions jumping out to an early lead on the Cowgirls.  UCCS posted three runs on the Cowgirls in the very first inning and rode that momentum to a 5-0 shutout win on Highlands' home field.  Emily Jennings belted a three-run homerun in the first inning and got the Mountain Lions started in the fourth inning by singling, Christina Blanton subsequently hit a homerun of her own and put UCCS' last two runs on the board.  Jessica Belsterling (10-6) received the win, pitching all seven innings and giving up only five hits while striking out ten batters.

The Mountain Lions continued their good play in the second game on Saturday by going into the second inning with a 2-0 early lead.  The Mountain Lions again had big fourth inning and took advantage of Cowgirl errors in order to gain a 6-0 lead.  The Cowgirls tried to sneak their way back in in the bottom of the fourth with a couple of big hits, however Jessica Belsterling came in and saved the day for the Mountain Lions by stopping the bleeding at just two runs.  The game ended with the Mountain Lions winning 6-2.  Marissa Wallace had four hits on four at bats and scored two runs for the Mountain Lions in the win.  Korey Kulpins got the win for UCCS, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits.

Day two action was not as kind to the Mountain Lions as, despite obtaining a 3-0 lead in the first inning again, they fell 8-4 in the first game of the day.  The Cowgirls rallied back from three-down by having four-run third and fourth innings in order to best UCCS.  Lara Matthewson batted 2-4 with one run and one RBI.  Jessica Belsterling picked up her seventh loss of season.

The second game on Sunday was a shootout that had the Cowgirls coming back again for the 10-9 victory over UCCS.  The Cowgirls rallied back from a 9-7 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to split the series with the Mountain Lions.  Becca Needler batted a perfect 4-4 with one run and 3 RBIs on the day.  Jessica Belsterling pitched 3.2 innings in the loss which dropped her record to 10-8.
