Mountain Lions Defeat Black Hills State and #13 Minnesota State-Mankato on Second Day of the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament

PUEBLO, CO - The UCCS Women's Softball team finished Saturday's doubleheader with a much different feeling than the previous day at the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament hosted by Colorado State University - Pueblo.

The Mountain Lions won both games on the day with a convincing win in the morning against the newest member of the RMAC Black Hills State and followed that up with another win against NSIC power Minnesota State-Mankato, ranked #13 in the nation in the preseason poll.  The Mountain Lions evened their season record at 2-2.

Against Black Hills State, the Mountain Lions put the game away early, needing only five innings to defeat BHSU 13-1.  Jessica Belsterling (1-1) was dominant, giving up only one hit and one run. Belsterling was literally one pitch away from having a no hitter when she gave up the only hit of the game with two strikes and two outs in the seventh inning.  The offense was powered by, you guessed it, Belsterling who went 4-4 with 4 RBI's.  Christina Blanton had a big game at the plate going 2-3, both hits being home runs, and amassing 5 RBI's.  Catcher Erin Milburn continued to stay hot offensively going 3-4 with an RBI.  All in all, the Mountain Lions could not be stopped and won the game decisively.

The afternoon game had a much different feel as the Mountain Lions took on Minnesota State-Mankato.  Mankato came into the game ranked #13 in the preseason national rankings.  Freshman Korey Kulpins (1-1) impressed from the mound pitching six strong innings and only allowing three runs on six hits.  Holding Minnesota State-Mankato to three runs was just enough as the UCCS offense put up four, three of which came in a big sixth inning.  Belsterling, again, swung a hot bat going 3-4 with an RBI.  The biggest hit on the afternoon, though, came from Marissa Wallace who delivered a key three run double in the sixth to give the Mountain Lions their final lead of the game.  Two Minnesota State-Mankato runs in the bottom of the seventh were shut down as Belsterling pitched the final frame to get the save, her first of the season.

The Mountain Lions leave Pueblo with a 2-2 record, having defeated the newest member of the RMAC Black Hills State decisively as well as taking down national power Minnesota State Mankato, and will begin RMAC play on February 25-26 playing Metro State in Denver, CO.
