UCCS Grabs Two from Colroado Christian
Even with the warm weather it took the Mountain Lions awhile to get the bats warmed up, but behind a seven-run sixth inning in the first game and a five run second inning in the second game the University of Colorado Colorado Springs won both games of their doubleheader against Colorado Christian University at Mountain Lion Field.
Rheana Trujillo and Belsterling enjoyed a great days at the plate both going 4-for-6 over the doubleheader while Marissa Wallace 4-for-8.
It looked like a long day out of the gate for CCU as UCCS jumped out to a first inning 1-0 lead following a Lara Mathewson RBI double.
Belsterling (16-10) worked out of jams in both the first and third innings but finally got tagged for a few runs in the sixth to change the tides in the Cougars favor to the tune of 3-1 CCU.
Just when it looked like Belsterling would get saddled with another close loss, she got a little help from her friends when her team responded with a monster sixth inning of their own to recapture the lead.
Becca Needler, Christina Blanton and Wallace drove in runs on three consecutive at bats before Jourdan Hitchings hit an extremely rare inside the park grand slam to put the game out of reach for the Cougars. Final score was 8-3.
The second game didn't start as intended for the Mountain Lions as they threw the ball around in the first inning to let CCU jump on top 2-0. Korey Kulpins (5-12) relied on her friends in the infield to limit the damage however with a double play turned by Blanton and a Landry Davis outfield assist to get a runner at the plate.
Mathewson had hit an absolute blast to straight away center to regain the lead in the bottom-half of the first, driving in three to make it 3-2.
UCCS wasted less time making it 8-3 in the second contest however as a huge second inning broke the will of the Cougars and gave Kulpins the cushion she needed to cruise threw the rest of the game. The outing was one of Kulpins best of the season.
The Mountain Lions tacked on a few more runs to make the final score 10-3.
The wins improved to UCCS to 21-22 overall and 19-19 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Christian falls to 27-24 overall and 23-15 RMAC.
