Mathewson Goes Deep Three Times in Doubleheader
COLORADO SPRINGS - On what was a blustery day throughout, the wind was blowing just right for the Mountain Lion offense.
Lara Mathewson had a fantastic Friday afternoon going 6-for-8 with three home runs and nine RBIs on the day as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs swept its doubleheader against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets at Mountain Lion Field.
It was the Black Hill State's first trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. with the Yellow Jackets being a new member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this spring.
UCCS won the first game 10-2 and the second 11-9. It was the Mountain Lions first games back since break ended and kicked off a vital weekend for RMAC positioning with conference playoffs looming. UCCS was in 11th place entering the day but could jump to as high as eighth with a strong weekend against the last place Yellow Jackets.
Besides Mathewson's efforts on the day, the Mountain Lion's received five hits from Jen Schellenberg, as well as three hits each from Marissa Wallace, Christina Blanton and Jourdan Hitchings.
The first game got off to a great start as Jessica Belsterling struck out the first three batters she faced in the top of the first. Mathewson then got her stellar day going with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Mountain Lions up 2-0 early.
Black Hill State's first run came when Lenaya Vigil drove home a run in the fourth. The run came off what seemed to be Belterling's only real mistake all game when she didn't look a runner back to second base allowing the runner to advance to third and eventually score.
Christina Blanton hit a two-run homer of her own in the bottom of the fourth. Mathewson added her second home run of the game too, as UCCS piled on five runs to regain a large advantage at 7-1.
Belsterling (12-8) pitched very well going six innings with seven strikeouts.
Nikki Chacon (0-3) of Black Hills State got saddled with the loss.
Black Hills State got off to a quick start in the second game with two quick runs but Belterling had a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to put the Mountain Lions on top 3-2.
Lara Mathewson went deep again in the second inning with a three-run blast to make it 6-2 UCCS in front.
However, in the fourth inning things started to come undone for the Mountain Lions.
Schellenberg made an error in left field allowing a run to score making it 6-3. Then with only one out and runners on second and third, Korey Kulpins got a big strikeout and looked like she would escape the inning for a moment. Allie Alverson had other ideas however as she doubled home two runs to tie the score at 6-6.
A two-out walk issued by Belsterling in the fifth led to an RBI single by Cassie Smith in the top of the fifth, giving the Yellow Jackets the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth UCCS managed to load the bases with no outs for their freshman pinch hitter Becca Needler.
Needler delivered in a big way with a two-run double to put the Mountain Lions on top 8-7. Emily Jennings added to the cause with a big two-out two RBI hit to make the score 10-7.
UCCS' Rheana Trujillo drove in one more run to make the score 11-7.
A pair of runs by the Yellow Jackets made up the final score of 11-9.
UCCS improved to 15-18 overall and 13-15 RMAC, while Black Hills State dropped to 5-28 overall and 5-23 RMAC.
