When in Rome, Mountain Lions Struggle
COLORADO SPRINGS- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs went 1-3 (L 7-1, L 5-0, W 8-6, L 13-5) against the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers over the weekend at Mountain Lion Field. Lara Mathewson hit a walk-off grand slam in the Mountain Lion's lone victory.
In a series that saw 10 combined homeruns, the Mountain Lions (11-16, 9-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) only managed to hit .280 and left 23 runners on base while committing five errors. That, coupled with the Lopers' (11-15, 8-12 RMAC) Sarah Rome hitting .454 with a walk, double, three homeruns and seven RBI on the weekend proved to be too much for UCCS to overcome.
The Mountain Lions got swept on Saturday 7-1 and 5-0 as the Lopers' Kirstie Hiatt and Becky Dunn completely shut the UCCS offense down each pitching complete games. The duo only relinquished a combined one run on 12 hits while striking out 11.
Day two started out a bit better as the Mountain Lions carried a 4-3 lead heading into the final inning. Things took dismal turn quickly though as Nebraska-Kearney scratched across three runs to take a two run lead into the bottom half leaving UCCS with three outs to come up with two runs in order to extend the game to extra innings. The Mountain Lions would, in fact, not need extra innings or ANY of the outs the Lopers left them to work with. Three straight singles by Landry Davis, Jen Schellenberg and Jourdan Hitchings loaded the bases for Lara Mathewson. The powerful second baseman roped a line drive over the right-center field fence to give the Mountain Lions the walk-off 8-6 victory. Mathewson's grand slam was her team best sixth homer of the year. She is also leading the team in batting average, doubles, RBI and walks to this point.
The Mountain Lions couldn't ride the momentum of game one into game two as they were out hit 12-6 while watching four balls sail over the outfield fence for Lopers homeruns en route to a 13-5 loss.
Senior Christina Blanton added three hits on the weekend including a triple to give her the team lead in that statistical category while she trails Mathewson by only one hit and one homer for the team lead in those particular categories.
As the conference schedule approaches the midway point, the Mountain Lions will look to climb back into the playoff picture next weekend when they travel to New Mexico Highlands for a four game series with hopes of getting away from Mountain Lion Field will provide a spark. UCCS has dropped 8 of 12 at home including a 2-6 mark over the course of the last two weekends.
