UCCS Falls Twice to Colorado Mesa

COLORADO SPRINGS- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs dropped two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games to the Colorado Mesa Mavericks 12-9 and 14-4 (five innings) on a blustery Sunday at Mountain Lion Field.

Emily Jennings provided a lone bright spot offensively for the Mountain Lions as she went a combined 3-6 with three RBI, three runs scored and her fourth homer of the season.

In a windy game one, the Mavericks jumped out to a quick lead as each of the first three batters crossed home plate in the top of the first inning. The Mountain Lions sent ten batters to the plate in the second inning and registered five runs to take a 5-4 lead heading into the third. Over the next four innings, UCCS only had three base runners and managed to scratch across only one run.  With the score 9-6 in the top of the seventh, the Mavericks tacked on a few more as leadoff batter Taylor Gross belted a three-run blast extending the lead to 12-6. That would prove to be more important than even Gross may have expected as in the bottom half of the inning, Jennings hit a three-run bomb herself that would have knotted the game at nine a piece. UCCS couldn't complete the comeback attempt, falling 12-9.

With even more wind and cooler temperatures in game two, came cooler bats from UCCS. The Mountain Lions only sent more than four batters to the plate in an inning one time in the five innings and by then it was far too late to make an impact on the outcome. The Mavericks batted through their lineup in the first inning and exploded to a 6-0 lead before the UCCS even set foot in the batter's box. The Mavericks would go on to score four more in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth on their way to a 14-0 lead. UCCS finally managed to get some timely hitting in the bottom of the fourth when six of their eight hits in the game produced four runs. After keeping Mesa off the board finally in the fifth, the Mountain Lions went 1-2-3 in the bottom half-unable to prevent the contest from ending early.

Next up for UCCS is a non-conference contest in which the Mountain Lions will travel to Greeley to take on the University of Northern Colorado on Wednesday at 6 P.M.
