UCCS Splits With Mesa
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo -- Emily Jennings took care of the offense and Jessica Belsterling handle the defense as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs split a doubleheader with the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks by the scores of 3-1 and 6-14 Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Field.
The Colorado Springs native Jennings got the Mountain Lions scoring started in the first game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, driving in Lara Mathewson with a liner to right.
UCCS had the bases loaded again in the second but lined into a double play that got Courtney Maihi and Colorado Mesa out of a jam.
The third was not as kind to Maihi as Jennings belted a two-run homer that put UCCS up 3-0.
Belsterling (8-4) held Colorado Mesa in check for most the game totaling six strikeouts over her seven innings of work. The only Maverick offense came in the seventh when Taylor Gross drove home Lita Romero to bring Colorado Mesa within two but it was too little to late for Colorado Mesa as they fell 3-1 in the first game.
Maihi (6-5) gave up three runs over her six innings of work.
The second game of the doubleheader however, was not as kind to the Mountain Lions.
Jen Schellenberg singled home a run in the second to give the Mountain Lions the early lead. That lead did not last long though as Colorado Mesa got busy scoring runs in the top half of the third with six runs being pushed across.
The third inning was the only inning a fan couldn't afford to miss as a total of 10 runs crossed the plate during the third. Six Mavericks scored while four Mountain Lions scored.
Recent RMAC player of the week Lara Mathewson crushed a game tying solo home run in the fourth that knotted it at 6-6.
However the top of the fifth was another big inning for the Mavericks as extra outs led to seven more runs including a six run two out rally for Colorado Mesa highlighted by a Maihi 3-run blast. Meghan Smith added a home run of her own going deep to left-center. Belsterling entered the game on the mound during the long inning and got Tawnee Woosley looking to end the fifth.
Colorado Mesa pushed one more across in the sixth to make it an eight run deficit, which made it an early second game for the Mountain Lions.
Rheana Trujillo, Marissa Wallace and Mathewson all collected two hits.
Korey Kulpins (2-6) took the decision for UCCS who now stands at 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Likewise, Maihi picked up her second win of the day to put her at 7-5 now. The split puts Colorado Mesa at 12-10 overall and 8-8 in the RMAC.
