Lara Mathewson Named RMAC Player of the Week
Lara Mathewson, Junior Second Baseman from Westminster, CO, was named RMAC Player of the Week for her stellar play against Western New Mexico. Mathewson is now the second Mountain Lion to receive this honor thus far in the softball season, following Jessica Belserling who was named RMAC Player of the Week earlier in the year.
Mathewson returned to action this past weekend after suffering a concussion in the first game of the season. In the four-game series against Western New Mexico, Mathewson had a .615 average (8-for-13), a 1.462 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .705. She collected multiple hits in three of the four games, including a 3-for-3 performance in game three of the series with seven runs batted in, a double, two home runs and three runs scored. In the first two games of the series, she was 4-for-7 with two runs, a home run.
Mathewson's biggest hit of the weekend came in the second game of the series when UCCS went into the bottom of the 7th down 7-2. With one out and one run already across, Mathewson stepped to the plate with two runners on and jacked a 3-run blast into the wind over the center field fence. This ignited the UCCS offense as they tied the game in the 7th and ultimately won the game in extra innings.
The UCCS softball team will take on Fort Lewis College this weekend. Due to snow in Durango, CO, the games have been moved to Farmington, NM.
