Denver, CO: The UCCS women's softball team completed a successful weekend against the Metro State Roadrunners, winning three of the four games played. The Mountain Lions (7-3 overall, 3-1 RMAC) beat up on the Roadrunners on their way to a hot start to the RMAC season.
Game One (Sunday): UCCS 8, Metro State 2
UCCS won 8-2 in the first game of the series and was highlighted by an outstanding pitching performance by Jessica Belsterling, as she and the defense held the Roadrunners to only 2 runs. UCCS jumped out to a 3 run lead after the first inning and never looked back. Rheana Trujillo led the way with 2 hits, one of which was her first HR of the year, and had 5 RBI's.
Game Two (Sunday): UCCS 13, Metro State 7
UCCS swept the day with a convincing victory. The Mountain Lions again jumped out to a 5 run lead in the third inning, and responded well when the Roadrunners made a comeback attempt. Melissa DeWitt, specifically, quieted the Metro comeback when she hit a Grand Slam with 2 outs in the sixth inning, followed by three more runs by the Mountain Lions in the seventh. DeWitt and Belsterling both had 4 RBI's in the game. Belsterling was the winning pitcher for both games on this day extending her season record to 3-1.
Game Three (Monday): UCCS 4, Metro State 12
The only blemish on the weekend, UCCS dropped this game to Metro 12-4. The Roadrunners were able to put some hits together in key innings, scoring 4 runs in the first and 5 runs in the fourth and the Mountain Lions were not able to respond.
Game Four (Monday): UCCS 14, Metro State 4
The Mountain Lions did respond in the final game of the series with 16 hits and a dominating pitching performance by Korey Kulpins (2-1). Every starter got in on the offensive production, led by Jourdan Hitchings who went 3-4 for the game with an RBI and SB. Jen Schellenberg, who had a great series hitting out of the lead off spot, had a key double which accounted for 3 RBI's in the third. The Mountain Lions led 9-1 after three innings and never looked back.
On the weekend, Landry Davis was a consistent offensive threat hitting .538 over the four games against Metro State. Becca Needler also provided a bit of UCCS softball history, tying the Mountain Lion record for doubles in a game with three doubles in the last game of the series.
