UCCS Falls to Metro State in First Round, Will Face Mesa State in Elimination Game
GOLDEN, Colo. - Becca Smith held Metro State to just five hits but two of those were three-run homers as the Roadrunners defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 7-3 Thursday in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
The Mountain Lions will face Mesa State later Thursday in an elimination game in the double-elimination tournament. The winner will another elimination game Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Molly Clark hit a three-run homer in the Roadrunners' four-run second inning. Julia Diehl repeated the feat in the fifth.
Smith (13-10) struck out eight and walked three. She also hit three batters. Diehl pitched for Metro State and improved to 18-6.
UCCS shortstop Marissa Wallace drove a one-out single to left in the first inning, went to third on a daring piece of baserunning following a single by Lara Mathewson. Mathewson hit a looper that bounced just in front of second base and, seeing that the third baseman had strayed too far from the bag, Wallace headed for third. Seeing Wallace on the move, the Metro State shortstop bobbled the ball for an error.
Wallace scored on a single by Jessica Belsterling that put the Mountain Lions up 1-0.
Another Wallace single started UCCS' other rally. She was followed by a single by Mathewson and scored on a double by Belsterling. Mathewson scored on an RBI groundout by Erin Milburn.
Metro State improved to 34-14 while UCCS dropped to 22-27.
