Three Mountain Lions Named to All-RMAC Softball Teams
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced its All-Conference teams on Tuesday for the 2011 softball season. UCCS sophomore Lara Mathewson and junior Becca Smith were named to the second team while their true freshman teammate Jessica Belsterling made the third team.
Mathewson, the second baseman from Westminster Colo., leads the team in batting average (.382), runs (30), hits (58), doubles (13), assists (105), walks (23), slugging percentage (.605), and on base percentage (.463).
Smith, a pitcher from Solon Iowa, was the Mountain Lions' ace. She leads the team with 13 wins, a 3.25 ERA, 161 strikeouts, and opponents only hit .295 against her. In her last seven appearances, she has six wins and one save. Since the beginning of April, she is 9-2 with a 1.99 ERA, 92 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 74 innings.
Belsterling, a pitcher and hitter from Glendale Ariz., was second on the team with a .346 batting average, eight home runs, 53 hits, and a .549 slugging percentage. She also led the team with 36 RBIs. Along with those impressive offensive stats, she had nine wins, 126 strikeouts and a 4.68 ERA as a pitcher.
Adams State's Katelyn Lovato was named the softball player of the year by the RMAC. Kelly Unkrich from Colorado School of Mines was named the pitcher of the year. The freshman of the year award went to Kristen Payne, also from Adams State, and the coach of the year award went to Kristie Hawkins of Colorado School of Mines.
