Smith Named RMAC Pitcher of the Week

By Doug Fitzgerald published April 26, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS - It took five years and 20 days, but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs has a Rocky Mountain Athletic Pitcher of the Week again. The conference announced Tuesday that UCCS junior Becca Smith received the honor.

Smith had all three wins, two as a starter and one in relief, as UCCS won three of four against Adams State and moved into eighth place in the RMAC standings. She struck out 22 in 16.2 innings and threw a solid two-hit shutout in Saturday's opener, a 3-0 UCCS victory. Smith had a 1.68 ERA and held Grizzlies batters, who came into the series hitting an RMAC-best .359, to a .183 batting average. She leads the RMAC in strikeout-to- walk ratio, fanning 6.4 batters for every one she walks

Smith is the first UCCS player to be named RMAC pitcher of the week since Amanda Ritchie received the honor on April 6, 2006. The last UCCS player of the week was Jessika Anastos on April 14, 2009.

UCCS was once among the most dominant pitching teams in the RMAC and Smith getting the pitcher of the week nod signals that coach Scott Peterson's determination to return the team to that status is beginning to pay off. UCCS had four pitcher of the week honors (three by Ritchie, one by Angie Heromena) in 2006, two in 2005 (Amber Colton) and had both pitchers in 2004 (Colton and Brenna Pool) named first-team All-RMAC.

Pool was named the conference's pitcher of the year in 2004, with Colton being so named in 2005.
