Belsterling Throws Three-Hitter, Drives in Only Run to Lead UCCS Over Upper Iowa
ROCHESTER, Minn. - Jessica Belsterling threw a three-hit shutout and drove in the Mountain Lions lone run as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs completed its participation in the 2011 NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament with a 1-0 win Sunday morning over the Upper Iowa Peacocks.
The Mountain Lions went 3-2 during the tournament and are now 3-6 on the season.
Both hits against Belsterling (2-2) were bouncers up the middle. The only ball to leave the infield in the air was a fly ball to left center in the fifth inning that UCCS center fielder Amanda Hathaway easily caught.
Belsterling put the Peacocks down in order in five of the seven innings. Two hits came in the second inning and the third was an infield single in the third. The freshman from Glendale, Ariz., struck out four and walked none.
She got the only run support she needed in, and provided it herself, in the first inning. Marissa Wallace legged out an infield single to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Landry Davis' sacrifice bunt. A batter later, Belsterling's double to center field scored Wallace.
UCCS managed just three more hits and a walk against Upper Iowa pitcher Brooklyn Koranda (1-4).
The Mountain Lions will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play when they host Fort Lewis on Saturday and Sunday.
